Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder
DRY FOOD IS THE ENEMY! Yet another reason to feed your cats a strictly wet food diet-Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder (LUTD). Garfield was surrendered because he had a urethral obstruction and could not urinate. A properly placed urinary catheter and hospitalization can be very expensive and Garfield's family was not able to pursue care for him and elected euthanasia. LUTD is a very treatable but painful condition. We took Garfield in, treated him, and are now looking for his forever home. This entire painful situation would likely have been avoided if he had been fed a high moisture, high protein food. Think "mouse in a can." Cats are obligate carnivores. Dry food has been highly processed, has poor nutritional value, no moisture, and keeps cats dehydrated even if they drink a lot of water. LUTD is a condition where crystals, blood clots, and mucous form in the bladder, create a clot, and plug the urethra such that an emergency "My cat is sitting in the box and can't urinate" situation occurs. This life threatening disorder is almost always preventable with proper diet. You wouldn't feed a horse a hamburger. So, why are we feeding our cats crap they wouldn't eat otherwise! Don't assume that your cat is behaving badly if he is urinating around the house. Take him to your veterinarian and have a complete urine analysis done.
